PEP is excited to announce the release of The Complete Works of W. R. Bion edited by Chris Mawson in consultation with Francesca Bion. The addition of the 16-volume series increases PEP-Web’s Bion library by 90%! Subscribers gain complete access to all of Bion’s writing in one place, including numerous texts exclusive to this edition. The new digital format, fully indexed by PEP, enables Bion’s texts and the accompanying editorial apparatus to be entirely searchable.
The Complete Works comprises twenty-two books and twenty-nine papers arranged both thematically and chronologically. Alongside well-known theoretical texts and supervisory records, there is a wealth of previously unpublished material to explore. Bion’s more personal texts are included, his autobiographical writings, diaries, and family letters. Readers will also discover illustrations and photographs throughout, including Bion’s own drawings and artwork.
Mawson’s accompanying editorial observations offer introductory discussions, helpful updates and corrections, and detailed footnotes throughout. These additions provide valuable context regarding both individual texts and the evolution of Bion’s thinking as a whole. Where previous publications of Bion’s work have commonly failed to offer indices, Mawson’s compilation of a Reference and General Index volume, now digitised and fully cross-linked by PEP, enables immeasurable research possibilities. Navigation to and between volumes, specific chapters, and individual entries is made easy via dedicated table of contents. Further development projects are planned to enhance the user experience of the edition.
Representing years of detailed collaboration with Francesca Bion, The Complete Works of W. R. Bion is an indispensable aid to psychoanalytic scholars and clinicians, and all those interested in studying and making use of Bion’s thinking. In Mawson’s own words, “To have all of Bion’s writings in one place, with the additional search and research possibilities offered by digital representation of the contents, enables a previously unavailable degree of access to the breadth and depth of his thought” (CW, I, p. vii).
